When I place a longer piece (over 10 inches) on the lathe, the tailstock is failing to lock and gets pushed back by the centre as I tighten it. Its ok on shorter pieces. Is it adjustable or is it faulty?
When the tailstock is locked in place, it shouldn’t move at all. You can remove it from the bed and ensure the locking key travels through the tailstock. Also ensure the bed hasn’t any oil or grease on it, that might cause it to slide.
The lathe has a tool rest blocking the end of the bed and I wasn’t sure if I could remove it. I found the hex nuts and it came away readily. On checking the tailstock, I slid it off and both the locking nut and the washer were, in fact, quite greasy. I’ve cleaned them and reassembled and it’s now fine. Thanks for your help.
