What am I doing wrong, I am mounting the jaws deep enough. Should i use an external shoulder to mount bowl (I use green wood then dry so quite heavy and wet)
I would definitely try a tennon mount, looks like the pressure from mortice is causing tearing of the wood.
Hi I had a similar problem some time ago and went over to using a sacrificial mount. This means you are clamping onto a solid disc. This means rethinking your design. You may have thought of this , already. However, hope this may be of some help.

I’d try using a tenon and keep some tail stock support in place for as long as you can. If you prefer to use a mortise leaving a lot more wood around the mortise will help. Bear in mind that when you expand the chuck jaws they are exerting a lot of pressure outwards and can easily split the grain especially if the wood is still wet. Try googling bowl turning tenon v mortise…there’s a lot of good advice on this subject…stay safe and happy turning….
