Candlestick made using Axminster eccentric chuck and additional hand carving - with lots of sanding!

I am a complete newbie, who only tried carving wood for the first time a year after I recently retired using bits of dried hardwood from the firewood merchant’s delivery. This is the third piece of wood I have ever carved I finished it with some wood varnish from Axminster and some green dye for the oak leaves…

Blossom Glow

My entry for Make It In March 2022, a project out of my comfort zone, adding some new materials to my work for a change.

A table lamp designed around the theme of biophilic design, with careful consideration and experimentation focusing on the form of the product, allowing the lampshade to take the form of a flower in full blossom.

Crafted with a mixture of materials, up-cycled mahogany lamp base, up-cycled mahogany lampshade bezel, recycled copper pipe stem, recycled steel bicycle spokes and Japanese blended wood fibre paper petals.

Draughts set project, made from oak and mahogany. The mahogany was an old table top that had been thrown out. Finished with oil.

’Dad’s Cabinet’

When my Dad died recently, I found some old packing crates in his garage and kept the wood, so this was my homage piece to him. Unfortunately I did not have quite enough for the Cabinet, but I had a plank given to me by Bruce Munro which was a close match. I included all of the nail holes and even some of the original painted surfaces to remind me of its humble origins! The glass shelves have a wooden cap with a concave front to soften the sharp edges and bring the piece together. It is a Krenov influenced piece with hand carved details in Cocobolo (all shelf supports or ‘consoles’ as well as the sprung catch, door lifter and handle) and it is for displaying some of my wood carvings.

Make it In March Competition 2022

….something for the children and grandchildren to remember Grandpa by😊

A brace of cannons:

  • an ancient ship’s deck cannon and
  • a vintage field gun and carriage
….purely from my imagination🤔😉

3 photos to follow here…(these are kindly being added for me by Customer Services thanks )

My very first time using a lathe so it’s a bit crude. Lathe arrived on the day of the big storms in March. As a practice and play I brought back life to a damaged tree. Hopefully my skills will improve but for the moment I’m chuffed with my new toy.

I’d like to share a custom acoustic guitar build for #MakeItInMarch22, recently completed in my home workshop in South Queensferry.

For those interested, it’s a European Spruce top, Mahogany back and sides and Rocklite Rosewood binding, veneer and fretboard. The neck is laminated 5 piece Mahogany/Maple. The celtic-inspired design was conceived from scratch, with the body shape being inspired by the head of a thistle.

Been a steep learning curve with many skills yet to master (at risk of becoming expensive firewood on occasion) but a hugely rewarding experience. Would thoroughly recommend it to anyone thinking of giving it a go - no better excuse for acquiring new tools like building a guitar.

Have really enjoyed seeing the creativity and skills of the other entries out there - some real talent in this bunch :muscle:

A quick build whipped up last weekend as a gift from some maple offcuts. It’s a whisky presentation/keepsake box with matching coasters for my Dad’s birthday at the beginning of April. I’m forever giving him beer and whisky for every Christmas and birthday and I finally have the skills to kick it up a notch (booze still required though…).

This is my Fairy Door, made from natural recycle timber, mainly beech but yew in there too for the mushrooms. Working wooden hinges, smoking chimney and a natural bark roof with some moss. Plus some tree pyrography in there too. All hand made using the bandsaw, milling machine, lathe, pillar drill all Axminster. Plus a Peter Childs pyrography machine. I know its a fairy door but it does look as if a Gonk has taken over.

My first @axminstertools make it March #MakeItInMarch22 entry.
Special to me as it is an Elm casket for my mum’s ashes.
Managed to go though the Axminster kit, table saw, bandsaw and planner and the axcaliber mitre lock router cutter.
